As a member of the Travel 100 Group for the past 17 years, I know many of my clients quite well. I’ll never send them to the same destination twice unless they really want to go back. Instead, I’ll suggest something different. How about a skiing vacation? A backroads bike trip? A dude ranch or a cruise? My goal is to keep travel new and interesting for all my clients. This approach works particularly well with families, whose requirements change as the children grow up.
When I’m getting to know new clients such as honeymooners, we sit down together and have in-depth conversations about their needs. The length of the trip automatically narrows down the options. For instance, if a couple desires a one-week beach vacation, I’ll recommend a place accessible by nonstop flights -- the Riviera Maya, perhaps, or Puerto Vallarta. If they can spend two weeks, Costa Rica or a two-island Hawaii trip spring to mind. For three-week honeymoons, I might encourage them to try Europe. If they want to relax on the beach, I make sure their hotel is oceanfront. When they are looking for action, I mix adventures into the itinerary. That’s the personal touch I try to add.
It’s very important to me that my clients are prepared for their trip from day one. The last thing they want is to forget an ID or find themselves on a hiking tour that’s too strenuous. I educate people ahead of time so that all their bases are covered. And, I put together as much of their travel agenda as they request, stepping back when they tell me they would like some free time on certain days. Whether they prefer to bask on a beach in the Caribbean or sip wine from a vineyard in South Africa, I match their needs and wants with the perfect destination, creating lasting memories.
