Even before I became a travel consultant in 2004, I was always someone who friends approached when they wanted help planning their trips. Now, even though it's my profession, I still get a kick out of talking with clients, doing research for them and growing excited with them about their travel options. Honeymoons are particularly wonderful to plan, and I want each couple to remember their trip forever. While there’s a great deal of pressure on newlyweds to spend lots money on their first big trip as husband and wife, I can create the itinerary they want without breaking the bank. It’s important for them to know that they don’t have to stay in the most expensive hotel and eat at the fanciest restaurants. The point of a honeymoon is to spend time together, not go into debt. So, as I work with couples – and all my clients -- I always consider the value they’re getting, not just in terms of money but in terms of experience.
Since my husband, children and I take many trips together, I feel well qualified to plan excursions for families. For instance, now that I’ve taken a Disney cruise with our clan, I can recommend it wholeheartedly for intergenerational travelers. Sometimes the parents can sit by the pool guilt-free while the kids have a ball on their own, but there are just as many opportunities for the family to bond as a whole. I can also speak with firsthand knowledge about easy-going family vacations, like simple trips to a beach house on the coast or a cabin in Colorado.
My extensive travels have helped me identify different brands so I can describe them to clients and come up with the best accommodations for them. For families, I’ll recommend a hotel with food available throughout the day for the convenience factor. For honeymooners, I might suggest an adults-only resort. Experience also allows me to provide invaluable tips on other aspects of travel, like whether or not to purchase insurance, how to check in bags at the airport if you have an e-ticket, and how to navigate a particular theme park. I can say, “I was there last month and here’s how you do it.” This sort of attention to detail is key. It gives me the kind of credibility and reliability that people deserve.
