By Isabelle Gullö
Complete your next island getaway with a sensuous spa treatment to share. Set amid stunning seascapes, these favorites call on indigenous ingredients and time-honored techniques to rejuvenate from head to toe.
The purifying Kauai Clay Ritual at Grand Hyatt Kauai’s Anara Spa lets you experience the natural bounty of the “garden isle”. Fifty minutes long, the treatment begins with a full-body mask using locally derived, iron-rich clay infused with organic aloe, noni and awa. To allow the clay to deeply detoxify the skin, you’re wrapped in Hawaiian ti leaves. After a rinse, your body is cleansed with rich coconut vanilla lather and gently massaged using warm coconut vanilla body cream mixed with kukui nut oil. This natural therapy is best enjoyed in one of the spa’s five new garden hales, complete with its own private lava rock shower and steam grotto.
At brand-new Unik Resort on the idyllic island of Isla Mujeres, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, treatments draw inspiration from the Mayan goddess Ixchel. Set in a private couples suite, the Jai Tunich Massage uses traditional Mayan essential oils and warm local stones to relax body and mind. At the end of the treatment, stones are placed on key energy (chakra) points to instill a sense of balance. To heighten the divine experience, start out with a Umuli H’a therapeutic bath infused with a variety of indigenous plants, flower petals and honey to eliminate toxins. A revitalizing scrub of choice-papaya crystals, coconut, coffee and chocolate among them-is included.
The spa at Seven Stars Resort on Grace Bay in the Turks & Caicos incorporates ingredients hand-picked from the islands into its Sensual Massage. Couples enjoy a rubdown combing light pressure and warm massage oil made from soldier vine, seaside morning glory and strong back shrub-a potent concoction known to boost lovemaking. Island natives, many of whom were instrumental in the formulation of this organic treatment, have longed called on the healing properties of local plants and herbs to cure various ailments and prevent disease.
A couple’s paradise in itself, Namale Spa & Sanctuary in Fiji offers Moonlight Magic, a 90-minute therapy arranged during early evening in an ocean-view room for two. A calming foot soak is followed by one of the spa’s Specialty Massages, such as the Fijian Bobo Massage, designed to invigorate mind, body and spirit. A native therapist uses Pure Fiji oil and a combination of techniques, including long, luxurious Swedish strokes, percussion and spiraling movements, to release muscle tension and stress. When you return to your private bure in a state of utter relaxation, a sumptuous dinner made from fresh local produce awaits.
The treatment rooms at Little Palm Island’s Spa Terre in the Florida Keys provide therapy in themselves, whether you savor a massage in the oceanfront Palapa Point Pavilion, in the lush Zen Garden or in the exotic Rain Forest Room, located in the center of this tiny private island. One of the most romantic offerings is the 80-minute Tropical Essence, which consists of a tropical mango body polish and fragrant shower for two, followed by a Swedish massage using Spa Terre’s own aromatherapy oils.
On the Domincan Replublic’s Amber Coast, Bagua Spa at Boutique Casa Colonial Beach & Spa Resort incorporates minerals and tropical plant extracts indigenous to the area in all of its treatments. As part of the Togetherness Massage series, couples can sign up for a Just Bee rubdown in an oceanfront suite. The massage fuses rhythmic compression and energy work with warm oils concocted from royal bee jelly and honey. What better way to prepare for this spa twosome than with a dip in the resort’s rooftop infinity-edge pool, where you can soak in temperate water and striking sea views.
Double The Pleasure
A 550-square-foot spa suite featuring a personal relaxation lounge, double shower, infinity-edge soaking tub and garden landscaped with native Hawaiian flora create an indulgent setting for couples treatments at Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu, Oahu. The ‘Oli’oli Spa Ritual, one of the most popular packages, is inspired by Hawaiian tradition and native ingredients. You begin the journey with a Ho’omaka, an island ritual consisting of a foot soak using ‘alaea salt with flower essences. The pampering continues with a full-body skin brushing, a lehua honey scrub, a flower essence-infused infinity bath and an energizing lomilomi massage using wild rainforest flower essence and organic massage oils. Then, couples are treated to a Mamaki Mud and fresh ti leaf leg wrap. And there’s more to come. ‘Oli’oli ends with a scalp massage and a refreshing flower essence body mist, leaving you relaxed and rejuvenated from head to toe.
Ritual of Love
On Mexico’s island of Cozumel, spa-going couples at Presidente InterContinental Cozumel can treasure a Mayan Love Ritual side by side in an outdoor setting. You start off with shaman-guided inner meditation in the resort’s temazcal, a traditional Mayan sweat lodge. Next is a hydrating Exotic Island Flower bath followed by a deeply relaxing Mandara Balinese Massage, a signature therapy that combines long strokes, stretching and palm and thumb pressure techniques to boost blood flow and calm the mind. The final touch: An Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Facial to nourish the skin and a full spa manicure and pedicure.
