Born in Mexico City, Legorreta studied architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autonama de Mexico and established his firm, Legoretta Arquitectos, in 1959. His early projects included the Camino Real Hotel in Cancun 1973-1975, Zocalo Condominium, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2002. Visual Arts Center, at the College of Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico, circa 1998 offices for IBM, and the Kodak laboratories in his native country. The firmï¿½s current design commissions include the Mexican Museum in San Francisco, Hispanic Cultural Arts Centr in Dallas, and the Bank of Finance in Managua, Nicaragua.
Throughout his career, Legorreta has earned numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious Premo Nacional de las Artes, awarded by the President of Mexico, and the Gold Medal of the International Union of Architects. The accomplished architect, who has won awards for many buildings of vastly differing scale-yet all offering his own supreme blending of space, light, and color- called the Gold Medal ï¿½the biggest honor of my professional life.ï¿½
